The 7 Entrepreneurial Profiles: Understanding Yourself Better to Steer Your Success

Problem

Many entrepreneurs launch their businesses without truly understanding their personal profile, and risk floundering along the way. However, the VistaPrint study shows that business leaders share key traits—such as independence and a strong work ethic—that influence their success. Better yet, 84% of them believe that a certain personality type is necessary for success. Ignoring your profile, therefore, means missing out on your natural strengths and increasing the likelihood of trial and error.

Example

Let’s take the example of Léa, the founder of a tech startup. She is among the one-third of entrepreneurs who consider themselves visionaries. As a Dreamer, she imagines revolutionary new products every day that will change the world, but she struggles to bring her ideas to fruition. She misses concrete deadlines because she remains stuck in her world of ideas (much like the Procrastinator who “gets stuck in waiting”). In contrast, Karim is a true Hard Worker: he works day and night on his project, methodically solving every problem, but he sometimes lacks long-term vision. These contrasting profiles clearly illustrate that every entrepreneur has their own strengths and weaknesses depending on their temperament.

Outlook

Fortunately, these very different styles are neither good nor bad in and of themselves—they each have their own strengths. Studies (such as Larry Kim’s) show that entrepreneurs can be categorized into archetypes (the Visionary/Dreamer, the Strategist, the Doer/Executor, the Boundary-Pusher, etc.) to better understand this diversity. The key is to leverage one’s natural strengths. For example, the France Entrepreneur Observatory notes that one-third of leaders are visionaries: these Dreamers inspire teams and instill a strong sense of ambition. At the same time, other pragmatic profiles prefer to move forward step by step to secure their projects (40% adopt this cautious approach, according to Bpifrance).

Knowing who you are allows you to capitalize on your strengths and address your weaknesses. As Dynamique Mag points out, “identifying your entrepreneurial type helps you better understand how you operate and capitalize on your strengths…” and more than half of the entrepreneurs who have been coached report knowing themselves better and making more strategic decisions. In short: knowing your profile is a key to success. Identifying with one of the 7 typical profiles (Dreamer, Doer, Hard Worker, Strategist, Boundary-Pusher, Procrastinator, and Mentor/Leader) helps you adjust your strategy and surround yourself with the right skills. The most successful entrepreneurs often combine several traits (visionary and pragmatic, innovative and social…) to adapt to each stage.

Every entrepreneurial profile has its own unique strengths. The key is to know yourself: a Dreamer can better bring their ideas to life by surrounding themselves with a Strategist or a Mentor, while a Hard Worker will learn to step back and innovate. As our mantra says: “Knowing your profile means better steering your success.” By identifying your strengths and limitations, you create the ideal ecosystem around you—colleagues, tools, methods—to move forward more effectively. This is how you’ll turn your passion into lasting success and leave your mark on your industry.
